Paekākāriki

Paekākāriki is one of several modest coastal towns along the Kapiti Coast. It has a bit more village feel than Pukerua Bay to its south and is more rustic than Raumati to the north. As you leave the main highway, there are several cafes and restaurants, plus a cool artist co-op. Also, check out the nice museum and second-hand bookshop at the restored 1800s-era railway station.

The beach lacks the fascination and opportunity for beach combing of Pukerua Bay and is the south end of the long sweeping bay in front of Kapiti Island. But biking, walking, and playing in the sand or water are all just a step away.

Paekākāriki is also on Te Araroa. The popular section, the Paekākāriki Escarpment Track, starts by the railway crossing.
