Ōakura is a small town south of New Plymouth on the Taranaki Surf Highway (State Highway 45). It has a nice 2 km-long surf beach facing the Tasman Sea. It's great for lying about, going for a swim, and surfing. At the north end, you have a good view of Paritutu and the Sugar Loaf Islands in the far distance.
There is a campground at the south end of the beach and a good pizza place about halfway down the beach on Tasman Promenade. It’s worth trying to be there at sunset!
