Nugget Point is probably the number one Instagram photo opportunity in the Catlins and the first place most people would stop. Access is along the coastal Nuggets Road from Kaka Point, at the northern end of the Catlins.
It can be busy, but it is a short and easy but spectacular walk to the lighthouse and the view of the “nuggets,” the rounded series of rock at the end of the point.
Like That Wānaka Tree, it has become a place to play with digital filters. This is understandable, as getting the perfect light can be hit and miss on a visit to the point.
Roaring Bay which is just to the north of the point has a penguin hide, if you have the requisite patience and desire to wait until dusk, about 9.30 to 10 in the evening in summer.
