Monro Beach

Monro Beach is an attractive, short, sandy Westland beach between two rocky points, accessed from the Monro Beach Walk. In spring, it is a good place to see the rare Fiordland crested penguin (tawaki) with some patience. Hector dolphin, sea lion, and seal sightings are also possible.

It’s exactly where you would want to hang around for a while, but the sandflies were too much on the day. Instead, we grabbed a few snaps and then returned to the sandfly-free forest's safety. Other options include trying insect repellent, picking a sunny day with a bit of a breeze, or opting for winter!

The track car park entrance is accessible from State Highway 6, just past the Moeraki Wilderness Lodge entrance heading north.
