Once you leave Lake Wānaka behind, State Highway 6 follows the Makarora River. The mountains on either side climb steeply out of the valley, and many are capped with snow in winter.
There are plenty of stopping points to access the river, but our favourites are the Cameron Flat Campsite, Blue Pools car park, and Davis Flat. This is also the start of the historic Bridle Track to Haast Pass. The river views and up the valley are fabulous from both locations.
