The Maitai River is Nelson's largest river. It runs from the Bryant Range east of Nelson and flows through the city's centre into Tasman Bay.
Within the city, there is a cycling and walking path on the west side of the river. This is an attractive city walk with easy sidewalks to the Suter Art Gallery, Queens Garden, and Botanical Hill. You can access the river from the centre of Nelson by walking south or east down any of the main crossroads.
The river and the track continue to the Maitai Valley.
