Kawarau Gorge

The Kawarau Gorge is the main route between Queenstown and Cromwell and the original home of bungy jumping. You can stop safely to view the gorge in several places, including the spectacular entrance to Chard Farm, a winery in the Gibbston Valley.

Further on is the small Roaring Meg power station, viewpoint and historic reserve. Across the road from the power station is the car park for the Roaring Meg Pack Track, a seven-hour tramp in the Pisa Range with an overnight option at the Meg Hut.

As you approach Cromwell, you become more involved in gold history. Diggings above the gorge are obvious from the road around Goldfields.
