Isthmus Peak Track

What is the best day hike near Wānaka, you ask? It’s a real competition between Roy’s Peak Track and Isthmus Peak Track. Incredible to consider now, but hardly anyone bothered with either hike until people started posting their photos on Instagram. Personally, Isthmus Peak is my preference – there are lakes on either side, and it’s generally less crowded.

The hike up the track to the peak rises from around 400 metres to 1,386 metres, covering 8 km. The first 2.5 km and the last km are relatively flat, but otherwise, it is a slog up a series of switchbacks. Towards the top, go right for the peak and left for a longer exploration of the Matatiaho Conservation Area. Allow 5 to 6 hours for the walk to the peak and back. Take water and food!

Head north on State Highway 6 alongside Lake Hāwea to find the Isthmus Track. You will see a sign-posted viewpoint over the lake with a large parking area. Continue on for another 4.5 km, where there is a rough parking area on the lake side of the road. If you miss this, there is another smaller parking area about 300 metres further along. The access to the track is between the two parking areas on the other side of the road.

Thanks to @shua.sovine and @onsenvadrouiller for the photos!
