The Inland Road forms most of the alpine section of the Alpine Pacific Touring Route through the Hurunui region. At the Kaikōura end, the road is overlooked by the Seaward Kaikōura Range and then by the Amuri Range as you approach Waiau.
It is a lesser-known scenic route but well worth the drive. Hills, mountain scenery, and a scattering of farms dominate the landscape, with no towns or shops between Kaikōura and Waiau. There is a small resort village at Mt Lyford (skiing) where you can stop and explore.
