Glendhu Bay

There are several excellent viewpoints around Glendhu Bay on Lake Wānaka, and the best time to stop is on a calm day, revealing outstanding reflections.

As you approach the Bay from Wānaka, you will see a signposted reserve before the Motor Camp. This is also one end of the Glendhu Bay Track, a shared hiking and cycling trail, and the only place in the region with a view of Mt Aspiring (pointed out by a signpost). The Harris Mountains and the Buchanan Peaks are the main features, but you can pick out Mt Aspiring between them.

Head further around the lake on the road to Glendhu Bluff. There are three places with wide verges where stopping on the other side of the road is safe. At one of these places, there is a short track through the scrub to viewpoints over the bay. You can see the “alien” head and body reflection from here! Roys Peak is effectively the shoulders.
