Exploring the Ahu Ahu Track

Located in the Waitākere Ranges of Auckland between Karekare and Piha, the Ahu Ahu Track is an interesting, albeit moderately steep, walk through a mix of native forest and one of the few remaining areas of exotic pines.

The track also allows you to create a loop starting in Karekare with the more demanding Comans Track. Combined, they are one of the best coastal walks in the North Island, with Comans climbing steeply along the ridge between Karekare and Mercer Bay, then following the steep ridge 200 metres above the bay, with spectacular views. The easier return on the Ahu Ahu Track is shortly before Comans Track meets up wth the Mercer Bay Loop.

Track Description

The Ahu Ahu Track has an easy gravel surface and winds through regrowth native forest at the top and then exotic pines, which are being removed, lower down. The gentle descent of the Ahu Ahu Track compared to Comans makes it an ideal choice for the return journey after ascending via the Coman Track.

How to Get There

To reach the Ahu Ahu Track, take Karekare Road or Lone Kauri Road from Piha Road to Karekare. Just to the north of the main car park, you will see Watchmans Road, a short side road that takes you to the start of Ahu Ahu Track, next to The Watchman and just below the Coman Track entrance.

Other options while you are in Karekare include visiting the incredibly photogenic surf beach, walking to the Pararaha Valley and even Whatipū, and the short walk back along Lone Kauri Road to Karekare Falls. For the truly energetic, you can check out the very rough, steep track down to Mercer Bay. You need good weather, and it requires confidence and some clambering.
