Discover Tawhai Falls in Tongariro National Park
Tawhai Falls is an attractive detour located in Tongariro National Park, on the road to Whakapapa, Mount Ruapehu. This picturesque waterfall, surrounded by mountain forest and shrubs, is a must-see for those exploring the area. The 13-metre falls provide a serene spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.
Exploring the Track
To reach Tawhai Falls, start from the parking area on Bruce Road. The track to the falls is mostly flat, making it an easy 10-minute walk through the mountain forest. As you approach the stream, a set of steps will lead you to a viewpoint where you can admire the falls. For a closer look, you can navigate the rocks upstream to the pool at the base of the falls.
Before descending the steps, take a moment to explore a short side track leading to a cliff-edge viewpoint above the falls.
How to Get There
To visit Tawhai Falls from State Highway 47, drive along Bruce Road approximately 2.5 km. The parking area is clearly marked, with easy access to the track leading to the falls.
From the Bruce Road, you can check out the historic Chateau Tongariro at Whakapapa, which may reopen one day, and drive up towards the skifield, with magnificent views of the rugged volcanic scenery of Ruapehu, Mt Ngaruhoe and across the northwest side of the national park. Nearby, you can also access the Tongariro Crossing and the walks to Victoria Falls and the Tama Lakes.
