One of the traditional favourites of NZ tourism is the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki in Westland. The Rocks have been seen as a unique feature of New Zealand since early European migration. It is now a pleasant, interesting cliffside walk with gorgeous native bush replanting as you approach the Rocks. Be warned: this is a very popular and easy walk, but it is still worth it if you can avoid the rush!
The new 3-day Paparoa Great Walk also starts in Punakaiki and traverses the Paparoa National Park, ending towards Blackball. The trail can be walked or cycled.
Punakai is on State Highway 6 between Greymouth and Westport.
