Exploring Whitianga

Whitianga, located on the Coromandel Peninsula northeast of Mercury Bay, serves as a vibrant gateway to this scenic area. Known for its blend of major services, dining options, and retail outlets, the town maintains a quintessential New Zealand beach atmosphere. Whether you're seeking a relaxing beachside retreat or a base to explore the surrounding attractions, Whitianga has a variety of accommodation choices and support services.

A Brief History of Whitianga

The name Whitianga means “crossing place,” referencing the traditional waka route used to cross the harbour. Originally inhabited by the Ngāti Hei iwi, the area was prized for its sheltered harbour, abundant seafood, and strategic location.

European explorer Captain James Cook arrived in 1769 aboard the Endeavour, anchoring in Mercury Bay to observe the transit of Mercury across the sun, which gave the bay its European name. In the 1800s, Whitianga became a centre for kauri logging and gum digging, and later boat building.

As the forests disappeared, it morphed into a farming support town, then into a tourism town. It is the only place in NZ where you can take a glass-bottom boat to easily observe marine life.

Beaches and Coastal Attractions

As you head north from Whitianga, you'll encounter several beaches. Buffalo Beach, Ohuka Beach, and Wharekaho Beach are all nestled within the sheltered confines of Mercury Bay. These beaches provide excellent spots for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the coastal scenery. Continuing along State Highway 25, the road eventually veers inland before reconnecting with the coast at Kuaotunu.

How to Get There

To reach Whitianga, you can drive along State Highway 25 north from Tairua or from Coromandel Town on the west coast of the peninsula. Alternatively, if you're staying near Hahei or Cooks Beach, consider parking at Ferry Landing and taking a short ferry ride across Whitianga Harbour.
