Discovering the Wairoa Viewpoint

Located in the Hunua Ranges of Auckland, the Wairoa Viewpoint offers a stunning perspective over the dam and the southern end of the Wairoa Reservoir. This viewpoint is a great short side track when walking the Wairoa Loop Track.

Exploring the Wairoa Tracks

To reach the Wairoa Viewpoint, walk from the car park by the closed gate on Otau Road towards the reservoir until you see the marked north entrance to the Wairoa Loop Track on your right. Follow this track as it climbs 140 metres through the forest to the ridge on the east side of the reservoir. After one km, you will reach the junction leading to the Wairoa Viewpoint. The walk to the viewpoint takes only a few minutes.

Continuing along the Wairoa Loop past the repeater station, you will encounter a second viewpoint. This spot provides a northern view over the reservoir, offering another angle of the picturesque scenery.

Allow approximately 90 minutes for a return trip to the first viewpoint. This ensures you have ample opportunity to enjoy the views and explore the area.

Getting to Wairoa Viewpoint

To access the Wairoa Viewpoint from Hunua Road, take Moumouka Road for 2 km, then turn north onto Otau Road. There is a car park immediately on the left to access the south end of the Wairoa Loop Track, as well as the Suspension Bridge Track and two nearby waterfalls. However, the quickest way to the viewpoint is to drive down Otau Road and park by the closed gate.
