Waipunga Falls

Discovering Waipunga Falls

Located along State Highway 5, Waipunga Falls is a stunning natural attraction in the Kaingaroa Forest region. This picturesque waterfall is a popular spot for photography, frequently appearing on Instagram due to its captivating beauty. The falls are situated on a high plateau before the highway descends into the hills and mountain ranges stretching from Wellington to East Cape.

A Hidden Gem: Waiarua Falls

The falls, on the Waipunga River as it flows south, are 40 metres high with two main chutes, making them particularly picturesque. Although the viewing point is about 250 metres away, they remain among the most stunning falls in the North Island.

While Waipunga Falls is the main attraction, there is another waterfall nearby, Waiarua Falls. This waterfall is also 40 metres and is partially visible to the left of Waipunga Falls. Unforuitnately, the viewpoint does not allow for a full view of Waiarua Falls.

How to Get There

Waipunga Falls is off State Highway 5, a 40-minute drive and 55 km from Taupō, on the route to Napier. The viewpoint for the falls is located shortly after entering the hills from the high plateau.

Also on this route, you can visit the beautiful and historic Opepe Reserve and enjoy the attractive Ahimanawa Range.
