Exploring Waipori Falls and Its Surroundings

Waipori Falls is an attractive waterfall located in Otago, near a small hamlet of the same name. The hamlet was established to support the hydropower scheme on the Waipori River. Situated roughly midway between Berwick and Lake Mahinerangi, Waipori Falls is accessible via the scenic and often narrow and winding Waipori Falls Road. This remote area is beautiful and a surprising experience for those willing to explore off the beaten track.

Discovering the Waterfall

The track to the falls starts from the Waipori Falls power station car park. From there, you'll find a clearly marked track to "Crystal Falls", which follows the picturesque Waipori River gorge. While a small waterfall is visible near the car park, it is not the main attraction.

The track itself is exceptionally scenic, with abundant, beautiful crown ferns. However, be prepared for a narrow, potentially wet, and slightly overgrown path with steep drops in certain areas. Exercise caution as you walk the trail. The walk to the viewpoint above the falls takes about 10 minutes.

Reaching the Viewpoint

Unfortunately, the view from the viewpoint is obstructed, so you'll need to find a way to descend the steep slope to get a better look at the falls. You can either clamber down to the base of the falls or scramble down to the top from the viewpoint. Neither option has a clearly defined path, so proceed carefully.

If you manage to scramble down, you'll be rewarded with a series of short drops and vibrant green, moss-covered rocks, creating a stunning natural scene.

Getting to Waipori Falls

To visit Waipori Falls from Dunedin, drive southwest on State Highway 1, then head northwest on Henley Berwick Road, shortly before you reach Lake Waihola. Waipori Falls Road continues northwest from Berwick. This road is scenic but narrow and winding in places, so take your time and enjoy the trip. Once you reach Waipori Falls, take the side road leading to the signposted power station. Park your vehicle in the car park beside a large grassy area surrounded by native forest. From Dunedin, the drive is 80 km and takes about 75 minutes.

The road changes to gravel, continuing to Lake Mahinerangi. From there, you can drive southeast to Lawrence and State Highway 8. Alternatively, you can head northeast to State Highway 87, then north to Middlemarch and Central Otago, or south to loop back to Dunedin.
