Exploring Pukatea / Whites Bay

Pukatea / Whites Bay is a sheltered bay located along Port Underwood Road, and the best beach near Blenheim for swimming. Just an 8 km drive from Rārangi, this bay is a favourite among locals for its scenic beauty and recreational opportunities. The drive itself is a visual treat, offering spectacular views along the way. Access to the beach and its campsite is clearly signposted.

Camping and Beach Activities

As you approach Pukatea / Whites Bay, the main DOC camping area is on your left. Nestled among regenerating forests on steep hillsides, it is one of the most picturesque campsites in the region.

If you're visiting for the day, proceed to the car park at the end of the road. From there, it's a short walk to the sandy beach, ideal for safe swimming. To the right of the beach, there is a natural arch. This feature is visible from the northeast end of the beach and can be accessed around the rocks at low tide.

Historical Significance

The bay is historically significant, named after Black Jack White, an American who deserted his whaling ship in 1828 to live with local Māori.

In 1866, the bay became a pivotal point for the telegraph cable connecting the South Island to the North Island. A short walk will take you to the historic cable station for a glimpse into the area's past.

Alternatively, you can start these tracks from Port Underwood Road or the Pukaka Valley at the end of Pukaka Road, which reduces the climb by 200 metres and saves a couple of hours.
