Exploring Paku Track in the Coromandel

Paku Track, located at the northern head of Tairua Harbour in the Coromandel, is a rewarding walk that combines ease with stunning views. This 20-minute track allows you to drive halfway up the 179-metre ancient twin peak volcano, making the remainder of the walk manageable and enjoyable. The final section is steep but short, and the effort is well worth it for the panoramic views.

Amazing Views and Geological Insights

At the summit, you are treated to a sweeping 270-degree view of the Tasman Sea, encompassing Pauanui and Tairua. The area is rich in geological history, with informative panels detailing the formation of Paku. The twin volcanic cores are visible, having been exposed as the cones eroded over time. This walk is best enjoyed on a clear day to fully appreciate the vistas and the educational displays.

How to get there

To reach Paku Track, head to Tairua in the Coromandel Peninsula on State Highway 25 from Hikuai to the south or Whitianga to the west. As you enter the town from the south, turn east onto Manaia Road and follow this to Hornsea Road. Follow this a short distance to Paku Road, which takes you to a signposted car park partway up the mountain.

While in the area, other nearby attractions include Tairua Ocean Beach, Sailors Grave, Pauanui and a more strenuous hike to the top of Mount Pauanui. You are also close to the historic gold mine walking tracks around Broken Hills.
