Discover Orokawa Bay

Located at the northern end of Waihi Beach at the eastern foot of the Coromandel Peninsula, the Orokawa Bay Track is a scenic walk that takes you through stunning coastal landscapes to beautiful Orokawa Bay. This track and bay are must-visits for the fabulous views and the opportunity to explore one of New Zealand's most picturesque bays, which is only accessible on foot.

Exploring the Track and Bay

The track to Orokawa Bay is approximately a 40-minute walk, mostly easy as it winds around the clifftops of Rapatiotio Point. It runs through regenerating native forest, up to 80 metres above the surf, with some excellent viewpoints.

As you arrive at the bay, you'll find a beautiful white sand beach adorned with mature pōhutukawa trees. The track runs behind the trees that line the beach, with several access points. At the north end, there are small streams that drain onto the beach, and some particularly ancient pōhutukwa trees.

It's an ideal spot to relax and enjoy beach activities, sheltered by the big trees. However, be cautious if you decide to swim and stick to an incoming tide, as the beach is not patrolled.

The Meaning of Orokawa

Historically, the area was part of a rich Māori landscape, with the name Ōrokawa translating to "place of the orokawa tree", with orokawa referring to the magnificent pōhutukawa trees around the bay. At one stage, there was a proposal to mine the area, but the surrounding reserve is now protected native bush, conserved for public enjoyment.

Walks to William Wright Falls and Homunga Bay

If you're up for more exploration, continue walking for another 40 minutes to reach the modest yet charming William Wright Falls. Alternatively, a 90-minute walk will lead you to the stunning Homunga Bay, offering even more spectacular coastal scenery.

How to Get There

To access the Orokawa Bay Track, head to the northern end of Waihi Beach on Beach Road, with parking next to the beach. The track is marked next to the cliffs at the north end.

Other beaches to visit around the region include Whiritoa, Bowentown, and Anzac Bay. The historic town of Waihi is just a few minutes' drive from Waihi Beach.
