Discover the Scenic Okere Falls Track
Located above the Kaituna River near Rotorua in the Bay of Plenty, the Okere Falls Track is an easy, one-hour loop with a blend of natural beauty and historical interest. This track is ideal for those interested in exploring green forests, dramatic rapids, and captivating waterfalls. The journey begins near the Okere Falls viewpoint and meanders along the gorge's edge through dense forest, with a rewarding side trip to Tutea Falls and nearby caves.
Historical Significance and Natural Beauty
As you embark on this picturesque walk, you'll encounter remnants of New Zealand's early hydroelectric history. Near the track's start, an old hydro generator stands as a testament to Okere Falls' role as the fourth site for hydroelectric power generation in the country, dating back to around 1900. Although the original plant is no longer operational, you can spot a rusting section of it below the viewpoint.
The falls themselves are attractive, and steps near the car park lead to a viewpoint overlooking the pool below, although it can be partially flooded at times.
Early Tourism and Adventure Activities
The track also highlights the area's early tourism history. In the 1800s, visitors would boat across Lake Rotorua, travel up the Ōhau Channel to Lake Rotoiti, and then reach the falls, with Māori businesses providing boats and guides. The construction of roads and bridges in the 1870s increased accessibility, leading to more visitors and the establishment of a restaurant. Trout were also introduced to the river, enhancing its appeal. Today, the track remains popular, with adventure tourism options such as white-water rafting with Rotorua Rafting and ziplining with Rotorua Ziplines.
Tutea Falls and Caves
A side trip along the Okere Falls Track takes you to the impressive seven-metre Tutea Falls and nearby caves. This detour is well worth the effort, with a close-up viewpoint. You can also raft the waterfall with Rotorua Rafting!
