Exploring the Nikau Track
Located in Whakanewha Regional Park on Waiheke Island, the Nikau Track is an easy and scenic walk through a forest of nikau palms and regenerating native bush. This track is also part of the larger Te Ara Hura trail network, which loops around the island.
Navigating the Nikau Track
The walk begins at the Sculpture Car Park off Gordon Road. From here, cross the road and head northeast into the park. The track initially follows a shallow gully before ascending to a ridge, where it intersects with the Tarata Track. At this junction, you have several options: head west on the Tarata Track, take the Kowhai Track and Dotties Lane to form a loop, or go east to connect with the Cascades Loop Track.
After reaching the Cascades, you can either retrace your steps or take the Central Track to Gordons Road, which is further east of the track entrance. The entire round trip takes about an hour.
Natural Highlights
The Nikau Track is a beautiful example of a nikau forest. You might also encounter some unusual fungi, adding an extra element of interest to your walk.
Getting to the Nikau Track
To reach the Sculpture Car Park from Ostend, take Ostend Road east to where it becomes Onetangi Road, and turn at the intersection with Obrien Road. Turn south into Obrien Road and then east into Gordon Road. Follow Gordon Road into the regional park until you see the signposted Sculpture Car Park
When on Waiheke, you can also explore sections of Te Ara Hura, which start on the north side and south side of the ferry terminal in Mātiatia Bay for a more extensive hiking experience. Another walking option is the Stony Batter Walk at the island's northeast end.
