Discover Napier's Scenic Waterfront Walk
Located right in front of the Napier town centre, one of New Zealand's most charming waterfront walks begins. This walk is a blend of natural beauty and cultural landmarks. On Saturday mornings, you can start your journey at the farmers' market situated below Bluff Hill. From there, the path winds through a series of gardens, parks, and playgrounds, and includes the National Aquarium. Along the way, you'll encounter a mix of Art Deco and modern sculptures, reflecting the city's rich artistic heritage.
Highlights Along the Path
As you stroll along Napier’s seafront and Marine Parade Reserve, you’ll encounter a series of beautifully maintained landmarks and gardens that reflect the city’s strong sense of identity. One of the first standout features is the Tom Parker Fountain, an elegant Art Deco structure gifted to the city in the 1930s. Its graceful curves and illuminated waters are a tribute to Napier’s distinctive architectural style, which emerged after the devastating 1931 earthquake.
Another iconic stop is the Pania of the Reef statue, a beloved symbol of local legend and cultural resilience. This bronze sculpture, inspired by a Māori myth, was famously stolen in 2005 but was later recovered and restored to its place on the seafront, reinforcing its significance to the community.
Continuing your walk, you’ll pass through the Art Deco Colonnade and Plaza, which frame stunning ocean views and serve as a popular photo spot. Nearby, the Sunken Garden is a peaceful, sheltered space filled with colourful plantings and seasonal blooms. The journey is capped by the Spirit of Napier sculpture, an uplifting figure symbolising the city’s strength and rebirth following the 1931 disaster.
A Unique Beach Experience
The walk also provides easy access to the beach, where you'll find a striking combination of dark pebbles and coarse sand contrasting with the surf. Note that this is not a swimming beach.
How to Get There
To begin this scenic walk, head to Napier's town centre. The starting point is located right in front of the town centre on Marine Parade, making it easily accessible.
