Mountains to Sea – National Park to Whakahoro

Exploring the Fishers Track Route

Located in the heart of the North Island, Fishers Track from Waimarino (previously National Park Village) provides an alternative starting point for the Mountains to Sea cycle trail. This route, rated grade 2-3, takes you through scenic, remote backroads to Whakahoroi on the Whanganui River, providing a unique cycling experience. One of the highlights is the intersection of Oio Road and Upper Retaruke Road, where you'll encounter unexpected signs of habitation amidst the remote landscape.

Cycling Scenic Oio Road

The journey along Oio Road is particularly striking, as it winds high above the Retaruke River, with stunning views before reaching Whakahoro on the Whanganui River, on the edge of Whanganui National Park. This ride concludes at Whakahoro, home to Blue Duck Station. Here, you can find a variety of accommodation options, including those at the station and a nearby DOC campground.

Activities and Wildlife at Whakahoro

Blue Duck Station has a cafe located next to the track, perfect for a refreshing break. If you have extra time, you can explore local activities such as horse riding, canoeing, and hiking. For wildlife enthusiasts, a walk down to the Retaruke River access below the DOC campsite might reward you with a sighting of the rare whio, or blue duck.

Getting to the Start of the Track

To begin your ride on the Fishers Track, head to Waimarino on State Highway 4 on the west side of Tongariro National Park. The ride to Whakahoro is 54 km and takes about 4 hours.

From Whakahoro, the Mountain to the Sea trail heads along the Kaiwhakauka Track to Pipiriki.
