Lake Westmere
Situated northwest of Whanganui, Lake Westmere is easily accessible after turning off State Highway 3 on the road to Kai Iwi Beach. Although less developed than the nearby Rotokawau Virginia Lake, the track around Lake Westmere provides a serene environment for a leisurely stroll. Lake Wiritoa
Lake Wiritoa is located southeast of Whanganui, a short drive from State Highway 3. This lake is known for its commercial campground and is a popular spot for water skiing. For those who prefer swimming, there is a designated no-boat swimming area at the west end of the lake, ensuring a safe experience for all visitors.
How to get there
To visit Lake Westmere, head northwest from Whanganui on State Highway 3 and take the turn-off towards Kai Iwi Beach. For Lake Wiritoa, travel southeast from Whanganui on State Highway 3, then Kaitoke Road to the lake. Both lakes are easily accessible by car, making them convenient day-trip destinations for those exploring the Whanganui region.
