Historic Machinery in Pureora Forest
Pureora Forest Park, located in the central North Island of New Zealand, is home to interesting forestry history. About 2.5 km along Link Road from Barryville Road on the north side of the park, you will encounter a "Historic Crawler Tractor" sign. This marks the start of a short walk through an ancient podocarp rainforest, leading to a well-preserved 1920s-era Caterpillar tractor and trailer.
This machine was once used to haul split tōtara posts and battens from the forest. When the tractor broke down, it was left in place and became part of the forest landscape. A purpose-built shelter now protects it, one of the DOC's efforts to preserve the park's forestry history. A panel explains the history of the tractor.
Exploring the Timber Trail and Vintage Equipment
After visiting the historic tractor, you can continue along the track to connect with the Timber Trail, a popular route for hiking and cycling. Additionally, nearby Hill Road (also known as Pikiariki Road) features more examples of vintage forestry equipment, offering further insight into the area's logging past.
How to get there
To reach the historic crawler tractor, travel along Link Road in Pureora Forest Park, starting from Barryville Road. The sign marking the "Historic Crawler Tractor" will guide you to the short walk through the rainforest.
Other nearby short walks include the Totara Walk and Forest Tower. The Rimu Track can also be found at the south end of Link Road.
