Discovering Henry’s Scenic Reserve
Located on the east side of Patumāhoe in southern Auckland, Henry’s Scenic Reserve offers a captivating short loop walk featuring a waterfall and a stream. This picturesque setting, with its moss-covered boulders and forest remnants, is just a few minutes' drive from the Secret Waterfall Garden (previously Wrights Water Gardens). Visitors can park near a short bridge on Hunter Road, where a signpost marks the start of Te Ara O Whangamarie, a walk that leads across farmland back towards Patumāhoe. The entrance to the reserve is visible after crossing the bridge.
Exploring the Loop Walk
The loop walk at Henry’s Scenic Reserve is a magical experience. Begin by heading right towards the bottom of the reserve and the stream. As you walk along the stream, you'll reach a viewpoint that offers a stunning view of the waterfall and the surrounding forest-enclosed boulders. The track allows you to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, with its gnarled trees and tumbling falls.
Views and Rock Hopping
From the main viewpoint, you can see the central section of the waterfall. Various viewpoints along the way provide different perspectives of the cascading falls.
You can also cross the stream by hopping over rocks and then scrambling up to the top of the waterfall. At the top, it's possible to cross the stream to the other side and return to the path, although you might need to get wet to do so.
A Short Yet Enchanting Visit
Despite being just a 20-minute walk, the reserve's enchanting scenery often encourages visitors to linger for an hour or more. The combination of natural elements creates a unique and magical atmosphere that is well worth the visit.
