Exploring Gorge Road in Manawatū
Gorge Road is a scenic route located south of the Manawatū Gorge entrance, on the eastern side of the Ruahine Range. This drive is particularly appealing due to its proximity to the Manawatū River.
Discovering the Route
Starting from the eastern side of Ruahine Forest Park, you can head south towards the east entrance of the gorge from State Highway 3 on Napier Road. This takes you to Woodhill Ferry Reserve, where freedom camping is available. It is next to the Manuwatū River, and you can access the Manawatū Gorge Track.
From there, cross the river on an interesting single-lane bridge, then continue south along Gorge Road to Balance Valley Road. You will eventually reach Pahiatua Aokautere Road, which crosses the Tararua Range to Palmerston North.
Other Scenic Routes
There are several other scenic routes around the Manuwatū. You can cross the Ruahine Range through a wind farm on Saddle Road. From Ashhurst on the west side of the Saddle Road, take Pohangina Road up the Pohangina Valley to access several scenic reserves and locations around the Pohangina River.
