Exploring French Pass / Anaru

French Pass / Anaru is a remote and charming beachside community located at the end of Croisilles French Pass Road in the Marlborough Sounds, approximately 70 km from State Highway 6, which connects Blenheim and Nelson. This area, also known as Elmslie Bay, faces northeast into Admiralty Bay, with Rangitoto ki te Tonga / D’Urville Island situated to the west. The beach here is particularly appealing due to its clear waters and vibrant sand, making it a delightful spot for swimming, although the rocky seabed can be a bit challenging underfoot.

Beach and Camping Experience

The beach stretches for 400 metres and is a popular spot for both swimming and boating. The DOC campsite is positioned at the west end of the bay, with a scenic view of the beach. A wharf is located about halfway along the beach, and a boat ramp beside the campsite facilitates a barge service. This service transports people and 4WD vehicles to Kopowai Bay on D’Urville Island, perfect for day trips or extended stays.

Unique Wildlife and Amenities

One of the unique aspects of French Pass is the presence of weka, which roam freely around the beach area. These birds provide a distinctive change from the usual ducks and seagulls, adding to the charm of picnicking under the pōhutukawa trees. During a visit, you might find a caravan café, but it's advisable to bring supplies if you plan to stay for several days.

How to Get There

To reach French Pass / Anaru, take Rongo Road north from State Highway 6 at the north end of the Rai Valley. This road becomes Crosilles Road, then Croisilles French Pass Road, for a total drive of about 70 km. This is a very scenic route, but it is winding and is a gravel road a bit over halfway to French Bay.

Along the way, you can stop and explore lovely beach communities at Okiwi Bay and Elaine Bay. Close to French Pass, check out Collinet Lookout and French Pass Lookout.
