The Enchanted Lookout Track is one of Marlborough’s most stunning hidden gems, a short, rewarding detour off the rugged Staircase Road in Mount Richmond Forest Park. Set within a section of exotic pine plantation at 1,040 metres above sea level, the lookout is just two km before the Lake Chalice Track car park.
From a signposted car park area off the road, it’s an easy 200-metre walk with a gentle 40-metre climb to reach the rocky outcrop that marks the lookout. As you emerge from the pine trees, the landscape opens up dramatically to reveal a sweeping panorama across the Wairau Valley far below, about 900 metres down. The view stretches over the braided course of the Wairau River and the vibrant patchwork of vineyards, farmland, and golden hills beyond. On a clear day, you can even see the distant tops of the Kaikōura Ranges shimmering on the horizon.
A picnic table at the summit invites you to linger and take it all in, whether you’re pausing for lunch or simply soaking up this fantastic elevated vantage point. Despite its ease of access, the Enchanted Lookout feels like a remote alpine perch and is well worth the short walk.
To reach the Enchanted Lookout, take Top Valley Road about 30 minutes southwest of Blenheim, then follow the steep and winding Staircase Road as it climbs into Mount Richmond Forest Park. From the start of the climb, it’s around another 30 minutes by car to the lookout turnoff. Just keep an eye out for forestry closures and take care on the gravel road — but once you’re there, the view is truly enchanting.
