Discovering the Coastal Path
To begin your adventure, drive from Waitati along Doctors Point Road until you reach the car park at the end of the road. From here, wait for the tide to recede before setting off eastward along the coast. The path takes you below towering cliffs towards Mapoutahi, a headland known for its historic pā site. This site offers panoramic views and also leads you to the picturesque Pūrākaunui Bay on the opposite side.
Natural Wonders and Scenic Beaches
As you make your way to Mapoutahi, you'll pass through fascinating sea caves and walk alongside colourful cliffs. The beaches here are beautiful and uncrowded, providing a tranquil atmosphere. The sand is notably some of the whitest in the South Island, and the beaches are sheltered, making them relatively safe for swimming.

Getting to Doctors Point
To reach Doctors Point, head north from Dunedin to Waitati. From Waitati, take Doctors Point Road and drive to the car park at the road's end.
Dunedin has many other stunning beaches, from Brighton to the south, St Clair and St Kilda on the central city coast, the remote Sandfly Bay on the Otago Peninsula or Aramoana on the west side of the Otago Harbour mouth.
