Big Manly Beach

Big Manly Beach, also known as Waiau Bay, is one of the most popular beaches on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula. Located on the northern side of the peninsula, it curves in a 1.3 km sweep from east to west, facing north to the Hauraki Gulf, and is known for its safe swimming, kayaking, and sailing.

The Māori name Waiau means “swirling water,” a reference to the currents that once flowed more strongly through the Hauraki Gulf before the harbour was modified for ferry and marina access. Historically, Waiau Bay was part of the seasonal travel routes of Tāmaki Māori, who fished and harvested shellfish along its shores. In later years, the area became a popular holiday retreat for Aucklanders and retains that relaxed bach-era atmosphere.

Big Manly has a wide beachfront reserve with mature pōhutukawa trees, a playground, public toilets, and a sailing club. The beach is highly rated by locals, especially at low tide when the sands stretch far out, and the waters remain shallow for some distance. During summer, you’ll often see paddleboarders, windsurfers, and beach cricket matches. Just around the corner is Shakespear Regional Park, where camping is available in scenic surroundings with access to bush and beach walks. The park is also a predator-free sanctuary for native birds.

To get to Big Manly Beach from Downtown Auckland, take SH1 north and exit at Silverdale. Follow Whangaparāoa Road along the peninsula and turn right onto Laurence Street, which leads directly to the beach.
