Exploring Arapuni's Historic Suspension Bridge

Located in the Waikato region, Arapuni is a small town that offers visitors a glimpse into New Zealand's hydroelectric history. The main attractions in Arapuni include the historic suspension bridge, the power station, the dam, and Lake Arapuni. This section of the Waikato River hydro scheme was developed in the 1920s.

Arapuni Suspension Bridge

The Arapuni suspension bridge is a highlight for visitors. Access to parking for the walkway suspension bridge is signposted in the town. This impressive 152-metre-long bridge spans a high-sided, bush-lined gorge, offering stunning views of the power station on one side and the river on the other.

Constructed in the mid-1920s, the bridge was originally built to allow workers from Arapuni to reach the power station construction site. Despite its appearance as a swing bridge, it feels stable when you are in the middle.

For those with more time, the easiest access to Lake Arapuni is via Lake Arapuni Road to Jones Landing on the eastern side.
