Paku Track is a relatively easy, but must-do, walk in the Coromandel. Easy, because you can drive halfway up the 179 metre ancient twin peak volcano at the northern head of the Tairua Harbour, then walk the rest. It takes about 20 minutes or so and is steep at the top.
Once there, there is a spectacular 270 degree view from the Tasman Sea over Pauanui and Tairua. There are also great information panels as you walk up, explaining the geological history of Paku – twin volcanic cores that were exposed as the cones eroded – and the surrounding area.
Best done on a fine day!
