Discovering Naseby in Central Otago

Naseby is a quaint town in the Maniototo area of Central Otago, New Zealand. Situated north of Ranfurly and beneath the Ida Range at an elevation of 600 metres, Naseby holds the distinction of being the highest town in Central Otago.

This town is steeped in history and charm. Originally established during the 1860s gold rush, the town's past is well-preserved with several historic buildings. The town is also the home to NZ Curling, and is surrounded by the Naseby Forest, which is popular among cyclists and walkers.

A Rich Gold Mining History

Gold was first discovered in the nearby Hog Burn in 1863, which quickly led to a bustling mining community. At its peak, Naseby had 4,000 miners, 18 stores, 14 hotels, two butchers, and a hospital.

The area south of the town was extensively mined, while the northern side was developed with water races and reservoirs to support the mining activities. Gold was also found at Kyeburn Diggings and as high as 1,200 metres on Mount Buster. Today, the town's population has dwindled to around 140 full-time residents, but its rich history remains a significant draw for visitors.

Naseby Forest and Outdoor Activities

Around 1900, residents began planting Douglas Fir, Larch, and Corsican pine trees, creating the Naseby Forest. This forest is now a hub for outdoor activities, with numerous biking and hiking trails, old reservoirs, and water races. One tree even claims the title of the tallest Christmas Tree in New Zealand. During the summer months, the town's population swells to about 3,000 as visitors flock to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and recreational opportunities.

Winter Sports and Curling

Naseby experiences harsh winters by New Zealand standards, making it an ideal location for ice sports. The town has developed a modern indoor curling facility and ice rink, establishing itself as the centre for curling in New Zealand. The nearby reservoirs, once used for outdoor ice sports, continue to attract those interested in winter activities when they freeze over.

How to Get There

To reach Naseby, take the Ranfurly Naseby Road from Ranfurly in the Maniototo Plain, where you'll be greeted by the town's welcoming tagline, “2,000 feet above worry level” as you arrive.

Other nearby attractions, also with a gold mining history, include Danseys Pass Road, the historic Danseys Pass Hotel and St Bathans.
