McLaren Falls

Discover McLaren Falls

McLaren Falls is located just off State Highway 29, about 20 minutes west of Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty. This scenic spot is perfect for those seeking a picturesque view of the waterfall from the pedestrian bridge. The falls are part of McLaren Falls Park, with the main entrance a further 300 metres along the road.

The Waterfall and Its Surroundings

The waterfall at McLaren Falls is formed where the Mangakarengorengo River meets the outlet from Lake McLaren. The water cascades over a wide rock platform and drops 5 metres into the Wairoa River. Historically, the flow has been influenced by hydropower developments in the region, resulting in a typically gentle stream. This allows safe access to the rock platform, which is a popular hangout. However, the stream becomes a torrent after heavy rain, and you are better off admiring the falls from teh bridge.

Below the road bridge, you'll also see a decommissioned power station from the 1920s, adding a touch of historical interest to the area.

A Place with a Storied Past

McLaren Falls carries a somewhat sombre history. Named in memory of a soldier who died in World War I, the area has also been the site of several tragic incidents, including murders and drownings. Despite the danger signs, some thrill-seekers still choose to jump from the bridge into the water below.
