Hiking from Mason Bay to Freshwater Landing
Located on Rakiura / Stewart Island, the 14.1 km track between Mason Bay and Freshwater Landing is a scenic and relatively easy section of the North West Circuit Track. At the end of the hike, you can take a prearranged water taxi from Freshwater Landing to Oban, keeping the hike down to a single day.
Journey Through History and Nature
Starting at Mason Bay, you will walk one kilometre through sand dunes to reach the Mason Bay Hut, managed by DOC. The path then leads you through the remnants of a failed sheep farming venture, where you can see old fences, pasture, a shearing shed, and the Island Hill Homestead, which serves as a living museum.
Continuing on, a short boardwalk crosses a wetland area, with views of the expansive dunes behind Mason Bay beach. The next part of the track is a 4 km stretch alongside the Scott Burn Stream. Take care here, as this section can flood during heavy rain. If the water level is above the flood indicator marks at either end, don't proceed until the level has declined.
Wildlife and Flora
As you progress, the track winds through mānuka shrubland, where you can encounter native birds such as korimako (bellbird), miromiro (tomtit), and toutouwai (Stewart Island Robin). For those wishing to extend their stay, DOC huts are available at both Mason Bay and Freshwater Landing.
How to Get There
Mason Bay is on the multi-day, arduous North West Circuit Track, typically walked counterclockwise. But you can also fly into the bay at low tide, stay at the Mason Bay hut overnight, then walk out, reducing the trip to 2 days.
Easier options include walks around Oban, part-day walks on the Rakiura Track and Ulva Island.
