The Mākōtuku Track has several entry points along State Highway 4, with clearly marked entrances at both ends of Raetihi. This accessibility allows you to choose the length of your walk, whether you prefer a brief stroll or a longer exploration. The track's diverse environments include a swimming hole, a barbeque area, BMX bike tracks, and a sculpture walk, ensuring there is something for everyone.
The track is dog-friendly, and ongoing efforts to enhance the area are evident. Native plants are being established along the riverside, and leisure spaces are being developed. You can enjoy amenities such as park tables, benches, an outdoor grill, and firewood generously provided by the Raetihi Bowling Club. At the southern entrance, large photographs and portraits of local elders, along with numerous sculptures, add cultural depth to the experience.
How to Get There
To reach the Mākōtuku Track, head to Raetihi via State Highway 4. The track has multiple entry points along the highway, with signposted entrances at the town limits on both sides, making it easy to locate.
Nearby is the town of Ohakune and access to the Tongariro National Park via the Ohakune Mountain Road. If you continue through Raetihi to Pipiriki, you can access the Whanganui River and the remote and scenic Whanganui River Road.
