Exploring the Macraes Goldmine

Located northeast of Macraes, in a remote part of Central Otago, the OceanaGold Macraes goldmine is a significant landmark in New Zealand. Since its inception in 1989, the mine has transformed from a hill into the largest gold mine pit in the country, producing approximately 120,000 ounces of gold annually. The pit reaches a depth of about 200 metres and has expanded to include underground mining operations.

Visiting the Goldmine Viewpoint

Visitors driving towards the OceanaGold Macraes goldmine will find a public entrance leading to a viewpoint. This spot offers an impressive view across the main pit, allowing for a closer look at the scale and operations of this extensive mining site.

How to Get There

Macraes can be reached from State Highway 85 between Palmerston South and Fairlie on Macraes Road. The goldmine is on your left, 1.5 km east of the town. Alternatively, you can get to Macraes from State Highway 87 on Hyde and Macraes Road. You can get there from Middlemarch on the scenic Moonlight Road.

While in the area, explore the historic town of Macraes and its surprising public artworks, and take the short drive to the historic Golden Point Reserve.
