EXPLORING THE NORTH OR SOUTH ISLAND?
TE IKA A MĀUI / NORTH ISLAND
Aotearoa’s North Island, Te Ika a Māui, is home to about 80% of the country’s human population, mostly located in urban hubs like Auckland and Wellington, the capital. However, the North Island also boasts a number of wine-growing regions such as the Hawkes’ Bay, and outstanding coastlines in Northland and the Coromandel. Then there’s the dense forests of East Cape, Manawatū-Whanganui, and Taranaki, geothermal activity in the Waikato, and the unique marine and bird life of the Bay of Plenty.
TE WAIPOUNAMU / SOUTH ISLAND
Aotearoa’s South Island, Te Waipounamu, is much more scarcely populated than the North Island, but is just as worth a visit. It hosts amazingly varied landscapes, from the New Zealand Alps in Canterbury, to the spectacular coasts of the West Coast, and glassy lakes and high altitude deserts of Otago. Travellers com from around the globe to visit the fiords of Southland, Marlborough’s internationally acclaimed wine country, and the remote national parks of Tasman and Golden Bay.
