Castle Hill

Castle Hill

Kura Tawhiti Castle Hill is just to the south of Castle Hill Village on State Highway 73, the West Coast Road. This is a very popular walk with an obvious and large carpark.

From the carpark, it’s about a 1 km walk to get to the exposed rocks. The delight is of course the size and shape of the rocks. They look a bit like castle ramparts, or in my view like a series of rough teeth, as you approach them. Other areas are jumbles of large stones. Wherever you look, there are points of interest and variation.

You can continue to wander behind the rocks and get to the top of some of them, with nice views over the valley and toward the Torlesse Range to the southeast. After this walk, you should still have time to visit nearby spectacular Cave Stream, just to the north of Castle Hill Village

A good time to visit is spring and early summer, when there is profusion of big daisies around the track and rocks.
