Cape Palliser: Seals and Scenic Views

Cape Palliser, located in the Wairarapa at the southeastern tip of the North Island, is known for its year-round seal colony and historic lighthouse. This remote destination is a unique opportunity to observe seals up close and enjoy panoramic views from the lighthouse.

A Seal Colony and a Lighthouse

As you approach the end of Cape Palliser Road and enter the Matakitaki-a-Kupe Reserve, you'll encounter numerous fur seals (kekeno) lounging near the roadside and on the coastal verge and rocks. This is the only permanent seal colony in the North Island, with pups present from November to January.

While they may appear relaxed, it's important to maintain a respectful distance when capturing photos, as they can be more active than they seem. Keep dogs on a leash and don't get between a seal and the water.

At the end of the road is the Cape Palliser Lighthouse and car park. Climbing the several hundred steep stairs to the lighthouse provides stunning views across the region, with widespread forest regeneration on the steep hills, making the effort worthwhile.

The lighthouse was built in 1897 to warn ships away from the treacherous reefs along the coast. Constructed from cast iron and assembled on-site, it initially operated an oil-burning lamp and required a full-time keeper. In 1954, it was converted to electric power, and by 1986, it was fully automated, ending nearly 90 years of manned operation.

How to Get There

To reach Cape Palliser, follow Cape Palliser Road from Whāngaimoana, south of Martinborough, to its end. The road takes you directly to the lighthouse and seal colony.

Along the way, you can visit Lake Ferry and the wide, dramatic beach, the Pūtangirua Pinnacles and the fishing village of Ngaiwi for fish and chips. At Martinborough, cafes, restaurants and vineyards await your return!
